The word 'Diamond' is derived from the Greek word 'Adamas' meaning 'invincible'.
A diamond is the hardest among all the precious stones found on earth and therefore
is said to be 'invincible'.
It is a pure, crystalline form of carbon, the hardest naturally occurring
substance on the planet. Diamonds, whose existence dates back as far as 6000 years,
are thought to be the first and were originally mined in India. They are believed to
have been found along banks of rivers like Penna, Krishna, and Godavari.
Colour, Cut, Carat, and Clarity are the four standards of value for every diamond. At SRK, we add one more 'C' to these 4 Cs. The 'C' of Confidence – the SRK Confidence.
If you thought diamonds are colorless, think again. They come in a wide range of colors. Colorless diamonds are considered to be the most precious ones since the absence of color enhances the diamond's ability to refract light to create rainbow colors. The less color a diamond has, the higher its color grade.
The scale begins with 'D', representing colorless, and goes up to 'Z' representing maximum color. Diamonds are color-graded by comparing them to stones of known color under controlled lighting and precise viewing conditions.
At SRK, we have diamonds color-graded from G to H.
A well-cut diamond can make light perform in incredible ways, creating a display of three important diamond attributes – brilliance, fire, and scintillations.
Brilliance is the combination of all the white light reflections from the surface and the inside of the diamond. Fire is the flashes of color that you see inside the diamond. Scintillations are the flashes of light you see when the diamond, the light, or the observer moves.
If the diamond is cut too shallow, light leaks out of the bottom. Too deep a cut and the light escapes through the sides making the diamond look dark and unattractive. Only diamonds cut in the right proportion make better use of light and will be bright, fiery, and sparkling.
A Carat is divided into 100 points. So, the weight of a 50-point diamond is 0.50 carats. But two diamonds of equal weight can have different values when the other 3 Cs – clarity, color, and cut – are taken into account. In the diamond industry, weight is measured to the hundred-thousandths of a carat, and rounded off to a hundredth of a carat. Therefore, even a fraction of a carat can make a considerable difference in cost.
A diamond's clarity refers to the absence of inclusions and blemishes. Inclusions extend into the diamond to the surface. Blemishes are confined to the diamond's surface. Together, they decide the clarity of the diamond. Diamonds with the least or smallest imperfections carry the highest clarity grade. Because these imperfections are microscopic, they do not impact the beauty of the diamond.
